History of golf

The first known game of golf occurred in Scotland in the mid 1500’s. The history of golf follows along with the development of golf equipment.

The first golf balls were actually made of wood, as you can imagine the distance the ball traveled was not very far. One of the other problems with early balls was standardization, many of the balls varied in weight and size. This variance made for inconsistent play so an effort was made to standardize the ball. Over the next two hundred years balls were made of leather stuffed with feathers. This helped the problem but it was not until the mid 1800’s that the quasi-first rubber ball was designed.

The ball was called the Gutta ball because the rubber like substance to make them came from the Gutta tree. Fast-forward to the beginning of the 1900’s when the first solid rubber cored ball was invented. This ball was then improved on over the next one hundred years. The balls are now tow piece and coved with a leather or rubber covering. The addition of dimples to the golf ball covering, also help increase distance and accuracy.

The club developed from literally sticks. Early golfers would carve clubs from trees, which surrounded their houses. Many a Scotsman spent the cold winter carving his clubs for the next season. The club has evolved to a multi million-dollar industry. You can currently purchase a variety of clubs. Some of the more popular are driver, irons, and putters.

The game of golf has become an American pastime. More then ten million people worldwide play golf yearly. With the popularity of golfer like Tiger Woods the game of golf has gained mass popularity.

Currently every major city in the United States has at least one golf course. Why not grab a set of clubs and a bucket of balls and hit the greens. Remember to stretch before you play and cool down when you are done. See you on the greens.
